Plot summary
On an expedition toward the North Pole, Captain Robert Walton's ship is trapped in ice, and a cloaked stranger who calls himself Victor Frankenstein comes aboard. Victor tells of his childhood in Geneva with his adopted sister Elizabeth Lavenza, and of his mother, who dies giving birth to his brother William. He vows to conquer death. At the University of Ingolstadt he and Henry Clerval study medicine under Professor Waldman, whose notes describe how to create life; Waldman warns him not to use them. Waldman is murdered by a patient during a smallpox inoculation, and the killer is hanged. Victor builds the Creature from that body and Waldman's brain, gives it life, and is horrified by what he has made.
