Plot summary
Madeleine is married to Rickie and they live in an elegant London house with their young son, Anthony. Her sister Dinah is a painter with a bohemian manner, and Madeleine has always been secretly jealous of her. After the sisters' father is buried in 1934, Madeleine asks Dinah to stay. Their mother, Mrs. Burkett, tells Rickie that she admires Dinah, and Madeleine overhears. Madeleine arranges an engagement between Dinah and Charles, a wealthy man. Dinah announces it at a family dinner. Rickie, who has long been attracted to Dinah, tells her that night to end it.
