Plot summary
The Slaters live in Wolverhampton in 1967, and their son Nigel takes to food early. His mother's asthma keeps her at home and her cooking rarely goes past opening cans, with toast served whenever a meal is spoiled. Nigel finds encouragement from her, but his father, who works at a factory, criticizes him. After her death, Mrs. Joan Potter arrives as the housekeeper, and her meals catch Mr. Slater's attention. The family moves to the Herefordshire countryside with her, and Nigel becomes the only boy in his school cookery class, where his talent at the stove sets him against Mrs. Potter in a contest for Mr. Slater's approval.
