Plot summary
Prague, 1938, weeks after the Munich Agreement. London stockbroker Nicholas Winton visits Czechoslovakia and finds families who fled the Nazis in Germany and Austria living in refugee camps with little shelter or food. He is introduced to Doreen Warriner, who runs the Prague office of a British refugee committee. Winton decides to save as many children as he can, gathering donations, working around bureaucratic obstacles and looking for English families to take them in, with help from his mother. Fifty years on, Winton is 79 and clearing the clutter from his office at his wife Grete's request. He comes across the scrapbook and lists he kept of the children he tried to bring out, and he weighs what to do with them, including a Holocaust museum and the attention they might draw to refugees today.

- The BBC Film website's description of One Life omitted that the children Nicholas Winton rescued were predominantly Jewish. After UK cinema operators advertised only that he saved "children from Central Europe", protests led BBC Film to change the wording to "predominantly Jewish".
- The people filling the studio audience in the film's recreation of the That's Life! broadcast are not actors: they are the actual children of the people Winton had saved.
- Winton's daughter requested that Hopkins should play her father in One Life. Hopkins read the script and accepted the part.
