Plot summary
Enola and Tewkesbury have come to Malta to be married. The island was chosen because Tewkesbury's father, Lord Peter, served there while Britain held the colony, and his mother regards it as the place most meaningful to the family. Sherlock attends the ceremony but speaks against it, telling Enola that becoming a Lady would cost her her independence; she answers that she can be a detective as well as a wife. Sherlock has also been quietly working on a case, and before he can explain it to her he disappears. Searching his room, she finds a torn scrap of an expensive dress and follows it into Valletta.
