Plot summary
Henry VIII's death leaves England's succession unsettled. His heir, Edward VI, is still a minor and in failing health. John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, is anxious to keep England Protestant and to stop the Catholic Princess Mary from taking the throne. He arranges a marriage between his son Guildford and Lady Jane Grey, and has the royal physician keep the king alive long enough to name Jane his heir. Jane wants no part of the marriage, and her parents resort to corporal punishment to make her comply. She and Guildford are hostile to each other, treating the union as a matter of convenience.
