Plot summary
In 2003, Dr. Serena Kogan of Cyberdyne Systems approaches Marcus Wright, a condemned man, and talks him into leaving his body to her research after his death. Years later the Skynet system becomes self-aware and turns on humanity, starting the nuclear war remembered as Judgment Day. By 2018, John Connor is fighting alongside the human Resistance against Skynet's machines, and he learns that Skynet has put Kyle Reese at the top of its kill list. Marcus wakes in the wreckage of a Skynet base with no memory of what happened to the world, and in Los Angeles he falls in with Kyle and a mute child named Star. When Resistance pilot Blair Williams is shot down, Marcus pulls her from the wreck and escorts her toward Connor's base.

- An early draft had John killed and his image kept alive by the resistance grafting his skin onto Marcus' cybernetic body, with Marcus then murdering Kate, Barnes, Kyle and Star; after that ending leaked on the internet, Warner Bros. changed the entire third act.
- Christian Bale lost his temper with director of photography Shane Hurlbut for walking onto the set during an intense scene, swearing at him and threatening to quit the film; audio of the rant leaked to the public and went viral.
- Special effects technician Mike Meinardus almost lost his leg filming an explosion: the sequence required a manhole cover to be blown into the air, and it hit him and partially severed his leg.
- In January 2018 Christian Bale revealed that he had rejected the role three times before accepting it, in part to spite those who had told him not to take it.
- Director McG wanted Christian Bale for the part of Marcus, but the actor wanted to play John instead, and that led to John's role being expanded in rewrites of the script.
- Helena Bonham Carter took her small part because her then-domestic partner Tim Burton was a Terminator fan; in July 2008 she delayed filming by a day and was given indefinite leave after four of her family members died in a minibus accident in South Africa.
- Sam Worthington tore his intercostal muscles during the first weeks of filming Terminator Salvation, but nevertheless insisted on performing his own stunts.
- Director McG said that Christian Bale broke his hand punching a Terminator prop on the set during the filming of Terminator Salvation.
