Plot summary
A call from the Smithsonian Institution reaches a Montana ranch with word that its young inventor has won the Baird Award for a perpetual motion machine; the museum's director, Ms. Jibsen, has no idea she is speaking to a boy of ten. T.S. Spivet shares the ranch with his father, a cowboy, his mother, an entomologist, and his sister. He invents and explores with the family dog, Tapioca. Since the prize must be collected in Washington, and Ms. Jibsen pictures an adult, T.S. slips away from the ranch early one morning, hoists himself aboard a freight train, and heads east on his own.
