Plot summary
In 1910 London, Kate Croy lives as the ward of her wealthy Aunt Maud, who took her in after her mother died and means to arrange a rich marriage for her. Lord Mark, an aristocrat with a large estate, courts Kate with her aunt's approval, but Kate's heart belongs to Merton Densher, a muckraking journalist. Maud disapproves of him and threatens to cut off the support she gives Kate and Kate's father, so Kate ends the relationship. Some months afterward, Kate is introduced at her aunt's dinner table to Milly Theale, a rich American orphan traveling through Europe with her companion Susan Stringham. Kate finds Milly charming and the two become close friends. Kate and Merton take up their secret meetings again, and Milly asks Kate to come with her to Venice.
