Rupert Graves

Biography

Rupert Graves is an English actor who works in film, television and theater and first drew notice in costume dramas based on E. M. Forster novels. Born in Weston-super-Mare, he worked as a circus clown after leaving school before roles in A Room with a View (1986) and Maurice (1987) brought him wider attention. He went on to appear in A Handful of Dust (1988) and The Madness of King George (1994), and his role in Intimate Relations (1996) won him Best Actor at the 1996 Montreal World Film Festival. On television he played Young Jolyon Forsyte in The Forsyte Saga (2002) and from 2010 to 2017 he played DI Lestrade in the BBC series Sherlock. His stage work includes Broadway productions of Closer (2000) and The Elephant Man (2002), and a London performance in The Pitchfork Disney (1991) that earned him a Best Actor award.
