Plot summary
Richard is an unsuccessful artist who constructs simple flying machines. When an attempt to launch himself in homemade wings from the top of a London office block fails and he crash-lands, a court orders him to do community service. He is assigned to look after Jane, a sharp-tempered woman with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis who has already driven away the people sent to care for her. In time the two become friends, and Jane, who wants to lose her virginity before she dies, asks him to find her a partner. Richard, who is also trying to keep his relationship with his girlfriend going, agrees to help her search, and he keeps building another experimental flying machine in his spare time.
