Enola Holmes sets up her own detective agency, and she is not taken seriously, unlike her famous brother, Sherlock. A factory girl named Bessie asks for her help: Bessie's sister, Sarah Chapman, has gone missing. Bessie brings Enola to the match factory where both sisters work, a place apparently in the grip of a deadly typhus epidemic, and Enola meets Mae, who worked alongside them. Following Mae to the Paragon Theatre, where Mae and Sarah dance, Enola finds a poem that a secret lover wrote to Sarah.
