Plot summary
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who have married and divorced each other twice, come to New York City in 1983 to rehearse Noël Coward's Private Lives. Elizabeth still dreams of a reconciliation, while Richard is involved with a younger woman, Sally Hay, and that stirs Elizabeth's jealousy. Richard's health is poor and he is a recovering alcoholic; Elizabeth drinks heavily and abuses prescription drugs, and she disrupts the rehearsal period. He takes to the work easily and draws praise, while she is anxious and short of confidence. Seeing how frightened she is, he promises to stand behind her through the show's run and helps her keep her pill use in check.

- Although Elizabeth Taylor was known for her jewellery, Susannah Buxton copied only two pieces for Helena Bonham Carter, a Cartier bracelet and a pair of diamond earrings, fearing too much would distract the audience.
