Plot summary
Maud Watts is 24 and works at a London laundry in 1912. While delivering a package, she is swept into a suffragette protest; Violet Miller, her workmate, is among those taking part. Alice Haughton, married to a Member of Parliament, presses the laundry women to speak before a Parliamentary committee about the vote. Violet volunteers, but her husband beats her, so Maud goes in her place. A public announcement tells them the vote will not be extended, and Maud is arrested and held in jail for a week. There she encounters Emily Davison, a confidante of Emmeline Pankhurst. Neighbors and workmates turn against her. She promises her husband Sonny that she will keep away from the movement, then goes to a secret rally where Pankhurst speaks.
