Plot summary
The wizard Gandalf arrives at Bilbo Baggins's hobbit-hole in The Shire with thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield. They eat his dinner and play music, and Thorin explains that Bilbo is to be a lucky fourteenth member of their company. The dwarves lost the Lonely Mountain to Smaug, a dragon who killed many of them and took their treasure, and Gandalf speaks for Bilbo before the hobbit can answer. On the road the company comes upon three trolls, who seize all but Gandalf and Bilbo. Gandalf's magic brings the sunrise, and the trolls turn to stone. In the trolls' cave the dwarves claim stolen treasure and find two swords, and Bilbo takes a dagger.

- The Hobbit was animated in Tokyo by Topcraft, a now-defunct Japanese studio whose animation team re-formed as Studio Ghibli under Hayao Miyazaki; some of its animators went on to establish Pacific Animation Corporation.
- Jules Bass adapted Tolkien's lyrics for the film's songs and helped Maury Laws compose the theme song "The Greatest Adventure (The Ballad of the Hobbit)", sung by Glenn Yarbrough; it was the film's only original song and became heavily associated with him.
- The film's visual style took its cue from the early illustrations of Arthur Rackham, and Rhode Island artist Lester Abrams designed most of the characters after Rankin saw Abrams' drawings in Children's Digest.
