Allen Jenkins
Biography
Allen Jenkins was an American actor, singer and voice performer who started on the stage in 1922 and spent decades as a wisecracking supporting player in Hollywood. Born on Staten Island, New York, the son of an actor and a musical performer and teacher, he agreed to a seven-year, non-exclusive deal with Warner Bros. in 1932 and was soon cast as gloomy, fast-talking types in comedies, dramas and musicals, as well as dancing. He also worked for other studios, among them as Humphrey Bogart's sidekick in Dead End (1937) and as an elevator operator in Pillow Talk (1959). Once the Warner contract lapsed he freelanced, later taking roles at smaller studios and moving into television, where he was a regular on Hey, Jeannie! and supplied the voice of Officer Charlie Dibble on Top Cat. His last screen appearance came in Billy Wilder's The Front Page (1974), released after his death.
