Plot summary
George "Hotsy" Hamilton is shy, vegetarian, and the heir to a meat-packing fortune. He has spent three years in the Belgian Congo on a scientific expedition hunting a rare snake, and now he sails back to Connecticut on a luxury cruise ship with Marty Kennedy, the valet who is also his guardian and closest friend. Women on board take an interest in him, and the one who keeps crossing his path is Jean Harris. She works as a con artist alongside her larcenous father, Colonel Patrick Henry "Handsome Harry" Harris, and his partner in crime Gerald, and the three of them mean to take a small fortune off the wealthy and inexperienced George.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- George Gobel, nicknamed "Lonesome", had the highest-rated show on NBC when The Birds and the Bees went into production, but had never appeared in a film; the remake of The Lady Eve was designed as a vehicle for him.
- The film's song "(The Same Thing Happens with) The Birds And The Bees" was recorded by several singers including Alma Cogan, whose version was a number-25 UK hit in 1956 under the shortened title "The Birds and the Bees"; the full title separates it from Jewel Akens' 1965 US number-three hit of the same name.
