Plot summary
In London, George and Mary Darling are getting ready for a party while their sons John and Michael act out the Peter Pan stories their sister Wendy tells them. Their father orders Wendy to give up the tales and leave the nursery, and sends the family dog, Nana, outside. That night Peter Pan slips into the nursery after his shadow, and he talks Wendy into flying with him to Never Land, where children never grow up; the pixie Tinker Bell comes along grudgingly. Off that island lies a pirate ship commanded by Captain Hook, who blames Peter for the loss of his hand and dreads the crocodile that ate it.

- Bobby Driscoll, Disney's first contract child actor, was the first male actor cast as Peter Pan, breaking a tradition of women portraying him in both films and stage productions. It was also his last Disney film: his contract was abruptly terminated shortly after its release.
- Walt Disney originally wanted to cast Mary Martin as Peter Pan, but Roy Disney disagreed, finding Martin's voice "too heavy, matured and sophisticated". Jean Arthur also approached Walt Disney to consider her for the role.
- Disney initially offered the role of Captain Hook to Cary Grant, who was "intrigued with" it, but Hans Conried was eventually cast as both Hook and, keeping the tradition of the stage play, George Darling.
- Fred Moore animated the mermaids and the Lost Boys, and worked as a character animator on Smee's minor scenes in the unit of a man he had once mentored; the film was his final work, as he died in a traffic accident on November 22, 1952.
- Michael Jackson cited Peter Pan as his favorite film, and from it he derived the name of his estate, Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara, California, where he had a private amusement park.
- In 2021 Disney limited the film to viewers 7 years and older on Disney+, citing depictions of Native American characters that were "stereotypical" and not "authentic", and references to them as "redskins".
- The song "What Made the Red Man Red?" has been removed from television airings of the film and widely described as racist since 2014.
