Plot summary
Milo lives in a San Francisco apartment building and can find nothing worth doing, complaining to a friend by telephone about how pointless his days feel. A large gift-wrapped package appears in his room. Inside is a tollbooth, and when Milo pays the toll and drives his toy car through it, he enters the Kingdom of Wisdom in the Lands Beyond. There he meets Tock, a watchdog with a pocket watch set in his body, and the Humbug. The kingdom has lost its two princesses, Sweet Rhyme and Pure Reason, who are held in the Castle in the Air, and Milo sets out with his new companions to bring them home.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Completed in 1968, The Phantom Tollbooth was kept on the shelf by MGM for roughly two years and did not reach cinemas until late 1970 because of internal problems at the studio.
- The animation studio that made the film closed soon after its release, and MGM stayed out of the animation business until 1993, when it started Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Animation.
- Ralph, Milo's telephone friend, was added for the film and is not in Norton Juster's novel; Chuck Jones said the boy had to be called Ralph because "Steve or Mike would have called with something to do."
