Biography

George Cleveland was a Canadian actor who worked for decades on stage and screen. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, he first stepped onto the stage as a teenager in 1899 in The Octaroon and later performed as a vaudevillian. Between 1904 and 1906 he toured the world with a repertory company led by T. Daniel Frawley, then traveled major American cities in a repertoire of seven Shakespeare plays. He also performed with troupes such as the Mary Daniel Players, based in Port Richmond on Staten Island, and the Cloninger Company of Salt Lake City. He moved to Hollywood in 1936 and worked in films as an actor, producer and director. He appeared in more than 180 films between 1930 and 1954, but he was best known for playing Gramps Miller on the television series Lassie, appearing in its first three seasons and the opening episodes of the fourth. He died in 1957.
