Plot summary
Captain Hunt, a cavalry officer, takes pride in his friendly relations with the Indians. He helped arrange a peace treaty between Acoma and President Abraham Lincoln, and in 1860 Lincoln traveled to New Mexico to discuss peace and gave the chief a cane as a sign of their friendship. Hunt was promoted for the assistance he gave Lincoln in arranging the truce. After Lincoln is assassinated in Washington, the peace he arranged begins to break down. Col. McComb, the officer Hunt serves under, and the ambitious Judge Wilcox both oppose the treaty, and when Hunt raises his objection, McComb places him under arrest.
