Reginald Gardiner
Biography
Reginald Gardiner was an English actor whose career moved between the stage, films, radio and television. Born in London, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began on stage as a super before becoming a West End regular. He appeared in British revues and plays, then drew Broadway attention in At Home Abroad with a wallpaper imitation routine. On radio he was known for comic train and car noises. After starting in crowd scenes, he got his film break in Alfred Hitchcock's silent The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927). His Hollywood debut came in 1936, and he worked in almost 100 movies, often playing British butlers. His roles included Schultz in Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator (1940), Beverly Carlton in The Man Who Came to Dinner (1941), and parts in Christmas in Connecticut (1945) and the Laurel and Hardy film The Flying Deuces (1939). He also made many television appearances. He died in 1980.
