Biography

June Foray was an American voice artist whose career spanned radio, film, and television. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, she was doing steady radio voice work by age 15 and later voiced Disney characters such as Lucifer the Cat in Cinderella (1950), a mermaid in Peter Pan (1953), and Lambert's mother in Lambert the Sheepish Lion (1952). In 1954 Chuck Jones brought her to Warner Bros. Cartoons, where she played Granny and various witches. She also voiced Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Natasha Fatale, and Nell Fenwick for The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, played Cindy Lou Who in How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966), and was Grandmother Fa in Mulan (1998). Foray helped create the Annie Awards, won two Annies in the 1990s for Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries, and earned an Emmy in 2012 for The Garfield Show.

  1. Behind the camera

    Foray came up with the idea for the Annie Awards in 1972 after noticing that no awards existed to celebrate the field of animation.

  2. Behind the award

    Foray's portrayal of Mrs. Cauldron on The Garfield Show brought her a first Emmy nomination in 2012, and she won as Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program. At 94, she was the oldest entertainer ever nominated for and given an Emmy.

    In 1960, Foray supplied the speech for Mattel's first "Chatty Cathy" doll. She later gave voice to "Talky Tina," the wicked doll in the Twilight Zone episode "Living Doll," which first aired on November 1, 1963.

  4. Behind the camera

    Foray lobbied the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for two decades to create an animation award, and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature was established in 2001 from her petitioning.

    Foray first had her voice heard on the air at 12, in a radio drama produced locally. By 15 she had moved into regular voice work on radio.

  6. First role

    Foray got her start in radio with the WBZA Players. In the late 1930s she had her own radio series, Lady Make Believe.
