Plot summary
Frances Elliott, a Broadway leading lady, hosts a party after her show closes. Her father Gregory, an actor, and her seventeen-year-old daughter Nancy Barklay, who hopes to act, are among the guests, along with the Brazilian playwright Ricardo Domingos, who is weighing Frances for his next production. Ricardo tells her producer privately that he pictures a younger actress in the role, and once he sees Nancy perform in Connecticut he offers her the part. Frances has already sailed for Rio de Janeiro to study her lines, and Gregory has gone with her. Nancy accepts and follows them, and on the crossing the businessman Paul Berten overhears her rehearsing and takes her for a deserted wife expecting a baby.
