Plot summary
Prince Semyon has an arranged marriage in mind for Countess Marina Selanova, and she wants no part of it. She needs a way to reach Sitka, where her uncle can shelter her, and she goes to a captain called Portugee for the crossing. Portugee's rival, Captain Jonathan Clark, known as the Boston-man, frees his shanghaied crew, so Marina sends someone to bargain with him. Jonathan, who hates Russians, rejects her. She comes to a party he is giving, presents herself as the countess's companion, and talks him into taking her. He shows her the city through one night, the two fall in love, and she accepts when he asks her to marry him.
