Plot summary
In January 1944, Lieutenant Roger Carrington of the United States Army Air Forces flies in a C-47 over German territory on a leaflet drop and falls out of the plane. German soldiers chase him, and a local baroness, Marlene, hides him at her estate. Marlene opposes the Nazis and lets the American stay while he recovers, and she grows fond of him. When the Second World War ends, she keeps the news from him, knowing he would leave, and tells him instead that the Allies are losing ground and then retaking England. Nearly five years pass with Carrington still at her estate, believing the fighting continues.
