Ann Sothern

Biography

Ann Sothern was an American actress who worked in film, radio, television, and theater. Born in North Dakota, she began with bit parts in the late 1920s and made her Broadway debut in 1930. At MGM she was cast as the brash Brooklyn showgirl Maisie Ravier in Maisie (1939), a hit that produced a film series and her radio program The Adventures of Maisie. In 1953 she became the star of the sitcom Private Secretary, earning three Primetime Emmy nominations. She later headlined The Ann Sothern Show and voiced the title character on My Mother the Car. Her films included A Letter to Three Wives (1949), The Blue Gardenia (1953), The Best Man (1964), and Lady in a Cage (1964). Her final film, The Whales of August (1987), brought her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
