Plot summary
Captain Will Charity serves the Bureau of Antiquities, a secret body that keeps dangerous historical objects from being misused. He trails Otto Luger, who has found a map showing where the Midas box lies; anything placed inside it is said to become gold. Wounded, Charity leaves the two halves of a lapis amulet with Catherine Mundi and warns her to keep them from the wrong hands. She passes them to her sons, Mariah and Felix. Luger takes Charles and Catherine, and Mariah flees with Felix; Luger's men chase the boys and capture Felix. Charity sends seventeen-year-old Mariah to the Prince Regent Hotel, which Luger owns, to work as a porter, believing the box and the boy are hidden close by. On Prince Regent Island, Mariah learns that no child under twelve remains, and meets Sacha, a maid at the hotel.
