Plot summary
Richard Pimentel is born in Portland, Oregon, and his mother, who has paranoid schizophrenia, gives him up for adoption. His childhood with her is turbulent, and much of his raising falls to his grandmother and to his father, Dell Fong. After Dell is killed in an accident at his market, Richard's mother becomes his only guardian, and she is soon placed in an institution. As a teenager Richard shows a gift for public speaking, and after high school he visits Portland State University, where Dr. Ben Padrow tells him he needs to live a full life. Richard joins the military and serves in Vietnam, where a bombing costs him most of his hearing. He returns to Portland, enrolls at the university, and befriends Mike Stolz, an alcoholic, and Art Honeyman, a writer with cerebral palsy.
