Plot summary
Adam Fenwick-Symes, an aspiring novelist, is engaged to Nina Blount and short of money in 1930s London. Customs officers at Dover confiscate the manuscript he wrote for the newspaper magnate Lord Monomark, which had earned him a hundred pounds, so a wedding must wait. In the lounge of his hotel Adam wins a thousand pounds by sleight of hand, and the Major, who has been drinking there, offers to place the money on a horse named the Indian Runner. Night after night the same young crowd parties, watched in print by the columnist Simon Balcairn, and Ginger Littlejohn, once Nina's beau, works his way back into her company.
