Plot summary
Kevin Flynn, the head of ENCOM, disappears in 1989. Two decades later, Sam, Kevin's son, is the company's main shareholder and puts the operating system online for free. Alan Bradley, an old friend of Kevin's, tells Sam that a message arrived from Flynn's shut arcade, on a line disconnected since the disappearance. In a hidden basement Sam finds a computer and a laser, and is digitized onto the Grid, the virtual reality his father created.

- The effects team hired makeup artist Rick Baker to build a molded likeness of a younger Bridges head as the basis for their CG work, but scrapped the mold for not being youthful enough and, with no time to make another, reconstructed it digitally.
- The back of Hedlund's suit carried an illuminated, radio-controlled disc of 134 LED lights, and he kept getting shocked when his sweat touched the lights while filming a fight scene.
- Unable to agree with Bailey on a perspective for the film, Kosinski asked him to lend him the money to build a conceptual prototype of the Tron: Legacy universe, which was eventually presented at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con.
- The can of Coors that Sam picks up in the film was not product placement: the beer appears because Kosinski “just liked the color and thought it would look good on screen.”
