Plot summary
At a dig in the Dordogne Valley, a team is unearthing La Roque Castle and the village of Castlegard. Their leader, Professor Edward Johnston, travels to New Mexico to question the project's sponsor, ITC, and its head Robert Doniger. While he is away, the students Kate Ericson, François Dontelle and Josh Stern, the archaeologist Andre Marek, and Johnston's son Chris open a chamber sealed for six centuries and find a bifocal lens and a note asking for help, dated April 2, 1357, in the professor's hand. At ITC headquarters the group learns that Doniger's teleportation device opened a wormhole to Castlegard in 1357, where Johnston is stranded. ITC asks Marek and the others to go back and bring him home, and a security team led by Frank Gordon joins them.
