How to Build a Girl (2019) on Netflix

Plot summary

In 1993, sixteen-year-old Johanna Morrigan shares a Wolverhampton council estate flat with her would-be rock star father Pat, her mother Angie, her brothers Krissi and Lupin, and infant twins. She dreams of a writing life and talks to the portraits of her idols on her bedroom wall. A poem of hers is chosen for a televised contest, but nerves overcome her and she humiliates herself on national television. She then lets slip that the family breeds Border Collies illegally, and Pat loses his disability benefits. Wanting to earn for the household, she answers a London music paper's call for a rock critic with a review of the Annie soundtrack; the staff assume it is a joke, but she talks them into an assignment, dyes her hair red and takes the pen name Dolly Wilde.
