Plot summary

Mark Furness has worked as an architect, but his compulsions shape his days: he climbs stairs in a strange sequence, swears without meaning to and washes himself over and over. Stevie, his wife, asks him to leave their home, and his friends Nathan and Kathy take him in. When he swears uncontrollably at a meeting with his employers, he loses his job. Believing he may have a brain tumor or meningitis, he goes to a doctor. In the waiting room, another patient named Charlotte recognizes his tics and rituals, tells him they match obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette syndrome, and asks him to join the group she runs. There, among people with the same condition, Mark hopes to work on his problems and bring Stevie back.
