Plot summary
In Dorset, Bathsheba Everdene works on her aunt's farm, where Gabriel Oak, a neighboring sheep farmer, proposes and is refused; she prizes her independence. His new sheepdog drives his whole flock over a cliff, so he settles his debts, is left penniless and goes looking for work. Bathsheba, meanwhile, inherits her uncle's farm and leaves to run it. At a fair, Gabriel watches soldiers recruiting; a young woman named Fanny Robin points out Sergeant Frank Troy, her sweetheart, and tells Gabriel about a farm at Weatherbury. He arrives to find buildings ablaze and saves the barn. At dawn he meets the farm's new owner, Bathsheba, who takes him on as a shepherd. She sends her neighbor William Boldwood, a prosperous bachelor, a Valentine as a joke.

- Danish director Thomas Vinterberg made up the moment where Sergeant Troy grabs Bathsheba after the sword display, wanting the scene more openly sexual. The British crew nicknamed it the Danish handshake, and Vinterberg said he would have gone much further in a Danish film.
- Carey Mulligan said on The Graham Norton Show that she chose her own Gabriel Oak: she hand-picked Matthias Schoenaerts after seeing him in the French film Rust and Bone.
