Plot summary

In New York City, Norman Oppenheimer makes his money by doing favors for politicians and arranging their access to business figures. He becomes friendly with Micha Eshel, an Israeli politician, and gives him an expensive pair of shoes. Through Eshel he wins an invitation to the home of Arthur Taub, an important businessman. Taub takes him for an opportunist and orders him out. Norman tells a fellow passenger on a train, Alex Green, an Israeli criminal investigator, about his work and his friendship with Eshel.
