Plot summary
Bella Swan turns eighteen and dreams of growing old while Edward Cullen, the vampire she loves, stays the same age forever. The Cullens hold a birthday reception for her at their home, and a paper cut on her finger sends Jasper Hale lunging at her blood. Edward concludes that his family's presence puts Bella in danger, ends the relationship and leaves Forks with them. Bella withdraws for months, tormented by night terrors, and her father, Charlie, thinks about sending her to her mother. Her Quileute friend Jacob Black keeps her company.

- Chris Weitz considered replacing Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black in New Moon because the character grew much larger between the two films, but Lautner weight-trained hard and gained about 30 pounds, and in January 2009 Weitz and Summit Entertainment announced he would keep the role.
- Taylor Swift, a fan of Twilight, asked for a cameo appearance in New Moon, but director Chris Weitz turned her down because he felt it would be too distracting.
- With an estimated budget of just under $50 million, New Moon became the least expensive movie ever to open to more than $200 million worldwide.
- New Moon set a record for the biggest midnight opening in United States and Canadian box office history, taking $26.3 million in 3,514 theaters and beating Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince's $22.2 million.
- To make the film's wolves look real, the effects artists studied wolf culture and adjusted features such as their fat and height, and in February 2009 a group traveled to Wolf Mountain Sanctuary outside Los Angeles to see real wolves.
- Because the novel described the wolves as being as big as horses, the crew used life-size aluminum and board wolf cutouts on set as a reference for the actors, taking the cutouts away before the cameras captured the scene.
- The face-off between the Volturi and Edward was first planned as a huge battle with vampires being thrown everywhere, but it became a one-on-one fight between Felix and Edward after receiving a stamp of approval from author Stephenie Meyer.
- Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke did not return to direct the sequel, citing time restrictions for leaving the project, and Chris Weitz was hired in December 2008 to direct New Moon.
