Plot summary
Tony Towers has built a life as a nightclub manager and a local celebrity, and he is engaged to Sue Taylor. On Christmas Eve in 1985 he is traveling from London to Nottingham to join his younger brother Roger at a family reunion, with his marriage to Linda behind him and little contact with his son. In the next carriage along, Tony finds himself ten years further on with nothing left, and works out that the train carries him a decade forward with each carriage he enters ahead and a decade back with each one he returns through. He also learns that the decisions he changes touch the lives of the people riding with him.
