Plot summary
The 1997 general election puts Tony Blair and the Labour Party in power. Months later, Diana, Princess of Wales is killed in a car crash in Paris. She was mother to a future king but had divorced Prince Charles, so the royal family does not treat her death as an official one. Blair and Charles want the country's grief answered in public. Diana's family, the Spencers, ask for a private funeral, and Queen Elizabeth II, at Balmoral, questions whether Blair's reform program now aims at the monarchy.

- Helen Mirren's portrayal of Elizabeth II so pleased the real Queen that she personally praised the actress and invited her to dinner at Buckingham Palace, an invitation Mirren declined because of filming commitments in Hollywood.
- Screenwriter Peter Morgan confirmed that 'cabbage' really was Prince Philip's actual term of endearment for the Queen, drawn from the French nickname mon chou.
- Although the film shows aide Alastair Campbell coining the phrase 'The People's Princess' for Tony Blair, Campbell revealed in 2007 that it was actually Blair himself who came up with the line.
- To visually separate the two worlds of the story, cinematographers shot all scenes involving the Queen on 35mm film and all scenes involving Tony Blair on 16mm film.
