Plot summary
Duncan is a thirtysomething bachelor who is depressed and suicidal. Five girlfriends have come and gone in four years: Gemma, Wendy, Rhona, Olive and Natalie. None of those relationships lasted, and after the latest one fails he decides to quiz all five women about what went wrong. He wants the secret of a strong, healthy relationship, and of how to find love. From their answers he hopes to learn how to make the next attempt work. His mind travels back over the four years while he weighs the reasons each romance broke down. Advice reaches him from unlikely quarters, and elaborate daydreams break into the questioning.
