Biography

Jared Harris is an English actor who studied drama at Duke University and Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. He began on stage in Shakespeare plays at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and New York's Public Theater. His early films included The Rachel Papers (1989), I Shot Andy Warhol (1996), Natural Born Killers (1994), and Happiness (1998). He gained critical attention as Lane Pryce in Mad Men from 2009 to 2012, earning an Emmy nomination, and appeared in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), and Lincoln (2012). He played King George VI in The Crown, receiving a BAFTA nomination, and Valery Legasov in Chernobyl, winning the BAFTA Television Award for Best Actor and earning Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Other work includes Fringe, The Expanse, The Terror, and the film A House of Dynamite (2025). Since 2021 he has played Hari Seldon in Foundation.

    Jared Harris began his film career not as an actor but as the director of Darkmoor, an unfinished feature-length film he made for Duke University's Freewater Films in 1983.

    Harris earned a BFA in drama from Duke University in North Carolina in 1984, then went back to England for actor training at the Central School of Speech and Drama, finishing in 1989.

  4. Behind the award

    Jared Harris took the part of Captain Francis Crozier in The Terror, a 2018 series drawn from Dan Simmons's novel about Franklin's lost expedition. That November, the Royal Canadian Geographical Society gave him one of its first Louie Kamookak Medals for playing Crozier.
