Plot summary
Peter McGowan's string of hits as a playwright is ten years behind him, and the failed productions since have left him chain-smoking and sleepless in Los Angeles. His mother-in-law, Edna, is slipping into senility, his wife Melanie wants a child, and the neighbors' new dog barks through the night. His latest play sits with Brian Sellars, who is obsessed with Petula Clark. When a single mother and her eight-year-old daughter, Amy, who has mild cerebral palsy, move in next door, Melanie brings the girl into the McGowan household and Peter finds himself drawn to her. On his late-night walks he meets a stranger who claims to be Peter McGowan.
