Biography
Jane Adams is an American actress and screenwriter whose career has centered on independent film. Born in Washington, D.C., she studied at the Juilliard School, graduating in 1989, and performed at the Seattle Repertory Theatre. She made her Broadway debut in Paul Rudnick's I Hate Hamlet in 1991 and won a Tony Award in 1994 for playing Sheila Birling in the revival of An Inspector Calls. Her screen credits include Light Sleeper (1992), Happiness (1998), Mumford (1999), Songcatcher (2000), The Anniversary Party (2001), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Little Children (2006) and She Dies Tomorrow (2020). On television she played Dr. Mel Karnofsky on Frasier, earned a Golden Globe nomination for Hung and two Emmy nominations for Hacks. She also co-wrote and starred in All the Light in the Sky.

Adams chose the stage over film: she declined a role in the hit movie Sister Act opposite Whoopi Goldberg so she could act with the playwright Arthur Miller.
Early training
Adams was part of Group 18 at the Juilliard School's Drama Division, where she studied from 1985 to 1989 and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1989.
Behind the camera
Adams co-wrote and starred in All the Light in the Sky, a 2012 film, alongside director Joe Swanberg. Her work in it won her the Best Actress award at the Nashville Film Festival.
