Plot summary
John, a journalist, spends the months leading up to Hong Kong's 1997 handover to China searching the streets for scenes that give his work meaning. He loves Vivian, a woman trying to escape her past, but she struggles with social prejudice and knows that moving to England with John would only be running away. Jean lives from moment to moment in a city offering no security, while John's friendship with fellow reporter Jim keeps him steady. Jean's face carries a mark, and she knows her own limits. Vivian is also tied to Chang, a wealthy man whose obsession with saving face complicates his feelings for her.
