Plot summary
Sylvia Plath is an American poet studying at Cambridge in 1956 when she learns of a party for the magazine St. Botolph's, where she meets Ted Hughes, a poet whose work had already won her admiration. The two fall in love and marry. They travel to Massachusetts, home of her mother Aurelia, and both teach at Smith College. Sylvia notices how others respond to her husband's looks, charisma and success, and back in England, first in London and then in Devon, she raises their two children while working at her own writing, which does not come to her as easily as it comes to him.

- Frieda Hughes, Sylvia Plath's daughter, objected to the making of the film and denied BBC Films the rights to her mother's poetry. She published a poem in Tatler with the line that they wanted her mother's words to fill the mouth of their monster, their 'Sylvia Suicide Doll'.
- Pawel Pawlikowski was originally attached to direct but left over the lack of artistic control he was given, saying the script was not good and that with his methods of sculpting and changing things he would have been fired after a week.
- Much of the film was shot in and around the New Zealand city of Dunedin between October 2002 and February 2003, with the University of Otago standing in for Cambridge.
