Plot summary
In 2058, pollution and ozone depletion are making Earth unfit for human life. Professor John Robinson and his wife Maureen are chosen for a mission to the planet Alpha Prime, where they are to finish a hypergate so the rest of humanity can move there. Their children, Judy, Penny and Will, travel with them aboard the Jupiter II, together with the family's physician, Dr. Zachary Smith, and a fighter pilot, Major Don West, brought in as the ship's new pilot. Penny breaks curfew, and Will's time-travel experiment goes largely unnoticed by his father. Before launch, someone sabotages the ship's robot, and the Jupiter II departs with the family in cryosleep.

- Lost in Space opened in a record 3,306 theaters and took $20.2 million in its first weekend, ending Titanic's 15-week run at number one. It set the biggest April opening weekend at the time, beating Indecent Proposal's, until The Matrix passed it in 1999.
- Bruce Broughton's score for the film takes no cues from either of the TV themes composed by John Williams, while the Apollo 440 song "Lost in Space" does take cues from the second version of Williams' TV theme.
