Plot summary
Augustus Wren runs a small Brooklyn tobacconist shop, and each morning at eight he photographs its storefront from across the street, filling albums with pictures that Paul Benjamin dismisses as identical. Paul, a writer whose wife was killed, spends an evening with Auggie and agrees to slow down. The next day, crossing the street lost in thought, he is pulled from a truck's path by Rashid, a young man he invites to stay in his apartment. While Paul is writing, Rashid makes noise and breaks dishes, so Paul asks him to leave. Rashid's aunt then arrives to ask why Rashid had been lodging with Paul, saying his real name is Thomas and that his father, from whom he has long been estranged, was recently spotted at a gas station outside the city.
