Plot summary
Paradise Valley in 1905 is home to the Hacketts, and Daniel, the son, would rather be in New York City. His father Jonas tells him stories about Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan and John Henry, which Daniel has heard so often that he questions whether the men were real. The developer J.P. Stiles wants the valley's farmland, and the Hackett property sits at the center of his plans. Jonas turns down his offer, so Stiles shoots him, and the wounded man passes the deed to his son. With his father unable to work the land, Daniel hides in the family boat and weeps until he falls asleep. The ropes come loose and the boat floats off, and he wakes in the Texas desert, where Pecos Bill rescues him from thieves.
