Plot summary
Alan Furnace teaches at a primary school in London and spends his evenings playing jazz records as a DJ at a hospital. Beatrice, known on the streets as B. Monkey, is a jewel thief who carries out jobs with Bruno, and the two of them share a home with Paul, who deals drugs. The three are close, and Beatrice has begun to think about giving up her criminal life. A fight in a pub brings her to Alan's attention, and he tries to court her, though she turns him away at first. She comes to his DJ booth to make up with him. Frank, a gangster the group has worked for before, offers her a robbery, and she refuses it. Paul owes Frank money, and Bruno, who has been thrown out of the house, is left exposed.
