Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Disney had originally planned to release the film, but M. Night Shyamalan grew angry when studio chairman Dick Cook did not understand the story and felt Disney no longer valued individualism; he turned down Disney's offer to fully fund it anyway and took the project to Warner Bros. instead.
- The film's fantasy world began as a bedtime story M. Night Shyamalan invented and told to his own children before he turned it into a feature film.
SPOILER
Rather than take a minor cameo as in his other films, Shyamalan cast himself as a visionary writer whose work changes the world, and wrote in a film-critic character, played by Bob Balaban as arrogant and self-assured, who is ultimately killed off in the story.
